Education staff face off at sports tournament

Frazer said their sports teams excelled in football, netball, volleyball and indoor games.

A few months after contact sports were permitted at schools, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education educators and staff participated in the recent National Public Servant Sports Tournament (NPSST) in Bloemfontein.

KZN MEC for the Department of Education, Mbali Frazer congratulated the KZN Department of Education team winners and employees for their successful participation in the NPSST.

Frazer said their sports teams excelled in football, netball, volleyball and indoor games.
“You have made us proud by your wins. Sports is healthy and good for our body, mind and soul. This will no doubt improve teambuilding and enhance our education service delivery,” said Frazer.
The tournament came after the Department of Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, published amendments to the schools’ Covid-19 response plans.

The amendments outlined that sports tournaments and matches can be held subject to Covid-19 health and safety measures, saying that this includes the restriction of spectators.

“Contact sport, non-contact sport, including training, intra-school and inter-school matches, and all arts and culture intra-school and inter-school activities, may resume without any spectators. Other extra-curricular activities such as spelling bees, choir and school clubs may also resume. National, provincial, district championships and tournaments for both contact and non-contact sport that require learners to travel to other schools or provinces may resume with strict adherence to prescribed transport regulations and directions,” stated the new set of rules.
