Ray Nkonyeni mayor’s phone hacked

The public is cautioned about the person purporting to be the mayor, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi.

Someone is using the cellphone of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi to solicit funds from his WhatsApp contacts by either promising tenders or asking for advance funding on an urgent basis.

Ray Nkonyeni municipal spokesperson, Simon April said this in a statement on Monday, adding that the public is cautioned about the person purporting to be mayor Mqadi.

April said Mqadi’s cellphone has been cloned.

“This serves to warn anyone who receives a WhatsApp message from the mayor’s cellphone number requesting a certain amount of money that this is a scam as the mayor’s phone has been cloned. Above that, the mayor cannot promise people tenders in exchange for monies, as he is not part of any tender awarding process. The mayor can neither request a loan or any form of advance funds for any reasons,” he said.

April added that when the matter was detected, it was reported to and attended by the relevant cellphone provider.
However, added April, the mayor’s WhatsApp has continued to be hacked for more than seven days now.

“The service provider has unfortunately indicated that they are unable to immediately stop or block this criminality but have promised to do so in about six days or so. This therefore means, the mayor’s number is currently unavailable. Any enquiries meant for the mayor, can be directed to Simon April’s number or to the mayor’s office on 039 688 2002,” he said.
