Head-on collision leaves 6 dead

KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson, Craig Botha said a bakkie and car had been involved in a severe head-on collision resulting in the occupants to become entrapped.

Six people including a child died during a head-on collision on the R61 near the Umtamvuna Bridge on Monday.

A four-year-old child sustained serious injuries during the incident while a 10-year-old sustained critical injuries.

According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson, Craig Botha after emergency services arrived they found that a truck, two bakkies and a car had been involved in a collision. Botha said one bakkie and car had been involved in a severe head-on collision resulting in the occupants to become entrapped.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found three patients had sustained critical injuries of which one was a child approximately 10 years old. Two further patients had sustained serious injuries, of which one was a four-year-old child,” said Botha, adding that the patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment.

“Sadly though, six occupants sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived. One of which one was a young child. The cause of the collision is not known, but authorities are investigating,” said Botha.
