Developing artists in Umdoni

The purpose of the meeting is to build relationships with artists and to find a way forward in the development of the hidden economy.

Umdoni Municipality wants to establish an Events Coordination Panel that will control and supervise the development of artists within the municipality.

This was revealed by Umdoni Municipality mayor, Sibongile Khathi during a recent meeting with the creative industry in the area.

Among others present at the meeting was Ugu district chairperson of the Cultural and Creative Industry Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA), Siya Sotsu and Lindani Mkhize of the CCIFSA.

Khathi said the meeting was also aimed at coming up with a plan to collaborate with the creative industry in the municipality’s public programmes. Khathi said although the municipality does not have a financial fund that is directly responsible for this, the municipality is committed to working with the artist sector so that they can develop and find a way to earn a living.

What will follow this meeting is the establishment of a committee that will control and supervise the development of artists within the municipality. This body will be made up of artists from the Umdoni area and the other part will come from municipal workers. Soon, the municipality will advertise in the newspapers the plan to appoint this body, which will be called the Events Coordination Panel,” she said.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Umdoni Council, Phila Thabethe said the purpose of the meeting is to build relationships with artists and to find a way forward in the development of the hidden economy.
