Revellers enjoy Ugu Maskandi Festival

Mkhungo said tickets sales were also over 4000.

Although some revellers of the Ugu Maskandi Festival left the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre with mixed emotions on Saturday, organisers of the event have hailed the festival a huge success.

The second edition of the Ugu Maskandi Festival was held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday last week and hosted some of the biggest names in Maskandi such as Ntencane and Khuzani.

However, renowned artists such as Big Zulu, Mampintsha, Dladla Mshunqisi and more did not perform on the day despite them being featured on the event poster.

Taking to social media over the weekend, Gqom musician Mampintsha said: “Unfortunately, I will not be performing at the Ugu Maskandi Festival tonight. We have payment issues, therefore he will not be attending this event.
I’d like to apologise to all my fans for this predicament. No balance, no artist.”

Organiser of the Ugu Maskandi Festival, Siyabonga Mkhungo admitted that there were some shortcomings when it came to the festival.

Mkhungo said some of the top performers did not make it, saying that this was as a result of them having more than one booking in other provinces, adding that they failed to make it to the festival on time.

“Our sincere apologies to the supporters and this will be rectified at our next event in 2023,” said Mkhungo.

He added that the festival was a success since it attracted over 4000 people from around South Africa.
Mkhungo said tickets sales were also over 4000.

Meanwhile, Sthembiso Shazi who attended the festival said although he wanted to see Big Zulu, he enjoyed the event nonetheless.

“Firstly, I was sad that I arrived late at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre because of work, as a result I missed Khuzani’s and Ntencane’s performances. But when I got there I had the time of my life, the vibes were on point, it was packed and I enjoyed the good music and the company of the people I was with,” he said.

Another festival goer, Nozibusiso Mthembu said she enjoyed the performance by gospel music sensation, Jumbo.
She said when load shedding started they waited for over an hour and 30 minutes before the generator could be switched on.
Mthembu added that when power was restored, Jumbo gave them an unforgettable performance.
