Maritime University to replace Ugu Sports and Leisure

The provincial chairperson said they will develop skills, produce professional divers, building repair a centre for ships and boats, and build small boats all in the Maritime University.

The African National Congress (ANC) provincial executive committee (PEC) said it wants to close down the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe and open a Maritime University for the African continent.

This was revealed by ANC provincial chairperson, Siboniso Duma on Saturday at Esibanini Sports Ground under Umzumbe Municipality during a Cadres Forum.

Duma who is also the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs (Edtea) said the PEC has informed Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, adding that they told him that the university will be in his municipality but it will service the African continent.

The provincial chairperson said they will develop skills, produce professional divers, build a repair centre for ships and boats, and build small boats all in the Maritime University.

“Right now, We have a huge ocean belt surrounding us, but Africans do not benefit from it. The only way they benefit is through fishing and that is not enough for us to change the African economy. Which is why the ANC provincial executive committee decided that the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre needs to change to a Maritime University of the African continent,” said Duma.

Meanwhile, Duma said Umzumbe Municipality mayor Bongani Nyuswa must also do his final presentation before the PEC to bring the town of Hibberdene back under Umzumbe Municipality, so that the municipality can have a town of its own.

Duma, who is originally from Umzumbe Municipality said he was tired of having to go to his hometown which does not have a town.

He added that as the PEC, they do not think the mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality would have a problem with Hibberdene falling under Umzumbe Municipality because the RNM mayor is the ANC regional deputy-chairperson.

“The lobbying has been finished so now we are finalising it. Once the proposal gets to the ANC provincial executive committee, we will support it, we fund it and we start developing the area of Umzumbe. By the way, during holiday seasons, it is people from Umzumbe Municipality that go to Hibberdene Beach and spend money, so we want to benefit from the area,” said Duma.

He added that at the end of November 2022, they will be celebrating 100 days as the newly elected provincial executive of the ANC.
“Because this is a milestone, the PEC decided that it will celebrate it in the Ugu District,” said Duma.
