Runners ready to tackle Comrades

Runners were warned to take it easy since it was a training run, not a race.

Fifteen Ugu Athletics Club members took part in their longest run since the Covid-19 pandemic last weekend.

The run started at the Spar Market as planned and made a U-turn at San Lameer before heading back.

The route was described as ‘tough’ despite the ideal weather.

Runners were warned to take it easy since it was a training run, not a race.

However, one runner, namely Menzi Tshayiza did not take the advice and competed with his ‘shadow ‘, making a race out of it.

When those who followed him were at Uvongo, he was at the finish, about 10,5km ahead, finishing 70km in an impressive time of 4:50.

Out of 15 runners, 12 completed the run while three did 35km, half the distance.

Runners are now going to taper off, reducing mileage and concentrating on short runs and speed training, awaiting the big day of the Comrades Marathon on August 28.
