Ugu Athletics Club prepares for Comrades Marathon

The big race is around the corner, less than a month away.

More than 15 runners of the Ugu Athletics Club (UAC), who recently qualified for the Comrades Marathon, will do a 70km training run on Sunday, July 30, in preparation for the upcoming ultramarathon.

The Comrades Marathon will take place on Sunday, August 28 and each year, it alternates the direction between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

The chairman of UAC, Pardon Mathebula, said the run will start at the Spar Market in Tweni, make a u-turn at San Lameer and back to Spar Market in Tweni.

Mathebula said the route was strategically chosen to simulate the Comrades Marathon ‘down run’, as it is popularly known.

“The intention is to, among other things, test the strength of the runners’ knees. Will they buckle? We will wait and see. The intention is to also create belief that runners can finish the Comrades Marathon,” he said.
