Umdoni receives R1 million cash injection

The money is to assist with phase 2 of the Umzinto Informal Sector Programme.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (Edtea), Ravi Pillay, recently announced that the department has given Umdoni Municipality a cash injection of R1 million.

Pillay said the money is for Umdoni Municipality’s Local Economic Development Department to assist with phase 2 of the Umzinto Informal Sector Programme.

The MEC made the announcement when Umdoni Municipality leadership led by the deputy mayor, Mthandeni Mbutho, participated in a multi-disciplinary session that included representatives from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), National Credit Regulator, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Legal Aid, and many others.

According to Umdoni municipal spokesperson, Sphelele Cele, the multi-disciplinary session was aimed at educating consumers on their rights and also motivating the business sector on staying in business during these trying economic times.

Cele said MEC Pillay also unpacked programmes aimed at assisting the business sector while boosting the local economy.

“He also announced that the Umdoni Municipality Local Economic Development Department has been given a R1 million cash injection. Deputy mayor Mbutho emphasised the role of local business and also stressed the importance of support for local business. He also pledged that the municipality will work hand in glove with all business sectors to ensure local business success,” she said.

Cele added: “The second phase of the programme was a clean-up campaign led by the Edtea. It was aimed at cleaning the Umzinto river banks as it was polluted with dirt from the town and neighbouring informal settlements.”
