Designers compete for Durban July award

With the race day theme being, “Show me the honey”, they made sure that the student designers are following, reflecting, and understanding the content of the theme.

Student designers at the Esayidi Fashion School were part of the 2022 Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award competition.

According to the founder and director of Esayidi Fashion School, Zamabhele Ntshangase, five of their best-performing students were invited to submit entries for the competition.

Ntshangase said all entrants were mentored and guided by her and Makhosazane ‘Sistas Felas’ Ntshangase, who is an established designer in the industry.

She added that the 2022 Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award will showcase the depth of talent from design colleges and technikons across the province.

With the race day theme being, “Show me the honey”, they made sure that the student designers are following, reflecting, and understanding the content of the theme.

“It has been months of preparation for our students from design concept, to storyboards, pattern making, fabric selection, and the overall construction of the garment. Our students’ designs are all about their individual interpretation of the theme, exploring the fascinating subject of bees, the environment in which they collect and pollinate the environment around the hive. The theme allows for students to consider colours, textures, patterns, and their imagination. We believe that the judges will be looking for garments that are on trend and well executed, with an emphasis on being beautifully dressed for a day at the races,” said Ntshangase.

She added: “Fit, quality, and finish are what our mentors have been striving for since the beginning of preparations. All aspects of each look, the hat, accessories, and overall grooming have been considered as part of the judging criteria throughout the competition. Our students presented their completed work to a panel of judges on Tuesday, June 7, at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse.”

Ntshangase said, as a school, they are honoured to be part of such a platform, adding that the competition is just at the beginning because they are aiming for the top.

“Engaging our students in extra mural activities does not only encourage and motivate them but also puts our school on the map for actively participating in prestigious fashion events. Participating in such programmes is in line with our mission and vision for uplifting and exposing market access to aspiring designers and upcoming models,” said Ntshangase.
