Environmental committee visits Umdoni landfill site

Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature under the Conservation and Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee recently visited the Umdoni landfill site to conduct an assessment in terms of compliance.

Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature under the Conservation and Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee recently visited the Umdoni landfill site to conduct an assessment in terms of compliance.

The committee also wanted to see the effects the recent floods had on the landfill.

According to Umdoni municipal spokesperson, Sphelele Cele, the portfolio committee said there were a few areas that the municipality needed to improve on.

Cele said areas of improvement which were identified included tightening security controls, issue of electricity, and a possibility of creating reclaiming opportunities.

She added that Umdoni Municipality was also commended by members of the portfolio committee on its efforts to improve the site and its operations.

“The leadership of the municipality said such visits are aimed at ensuring the creation of pockets of excellence and the Umdoni landfill site has immense potential. The Speaker, Cllr Mbali Cele-Luthuli and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mthandeni Mbutho appreciated the visit by the legislature and committed to prioritise the raised areas of concern and ensuring seamless operation of the landfill site,” said Cele.
