Taxi driver gunned down by ‘passengers’

According to sources the incident happened around 6am near a local spaza shop.

A 42-year-old taxi driver was gunned down by two men who allegedly posed as passengers in the Lashoda area under KwaNzimakwe recently.

According to sources the incident happened around 6am near a local spaza shop. They added that the taxi driver Khehla Ngeleka was shot in the taxi while three people were inside.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said a case of murder was opened for investigation at the Port Edward police station. She added that it is alleged that on April 29 at 6am, a 42-year-old taxi driver was driving in Lashoda area when he was shot by two men who were sitting behind him posing as passengers.

“The victim sustained gunshot wounds and died on the scene. The suspects fled the scene on foot,” said Gwala.

Meanwhile, South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) provincial spokesperson Mduduzi Makhunga told Fever that they are worried about violence in the taxi industry in the Ugu region.

He added that on Wednesday last week, they met with the SANTACO regional leadership as they had not to received anything from the association in the region. At the same time they also discussed some of the issues in Ugu.

“Gamalakhe Taxi Association has been in talks with the Bambanani Taxi Association to try and sort out how they can both use the route they are fighting over but there has been no solution as yet. We are busy trying to find ways to stabilise the situation and decrease violence in the industry in the Ugu region. The region has not yet reported the Lashoda shooting to us as the province but we will be looking into it,” said Makhunga.
