Reviving Paradise: Let us love our mothers in the month of May

Remember to show your love for our Mother Earth by buying products in biodegradable or at least recyclable materials and by disposing of packaging responsibly.

May 14 is Mother’s Day in South Africa and many people use this opportunity to express their love and appreciation for their mothers.  We can show our own mothers our love and at the same time show our love and appreciation for our Mother Earth by investing in gifts that help the earth and don’t do any harm.

The first obvious place to start is by buying your mom a plant and we have many beautiful indigenous plants that can beautify the garden and the home and support nature.  The Green Net’s Indigenous Gem of the Month is the Ribbon Bush which has beautiful purple, pink or white flowers from May to early spring, good to cut and use in arrangements and can grow wonderfully in the shade.

Our TGN KZN Biodiversity calendar is still available at some stores and would also make a great gift, as would seedlings, and even organic compost and garden tools for those who love gardening.

Another way to help our Mother Earth is to buy local products, especially organic and clean products, locally grown coffee, organic vegetables and fruit, home made jams and preserves, herbal drinks, local crafts and clothing and biodegradable toiletries, cosmetics and cleaning products.  A number of producers and sellers on the South Coast stock Earth Friendly products – keep an eye out for fantastic local suppliers and support local markets as well.

Another great treat for Mother’s Day would be to take your mom to one of our beautiful local reserves or natural places for a day visit or even an overnight experience.  We have an abundance of beaches, gorges, grasslands and waterfalls, and for the more adventurous at heart there are caves to explore, hikes to enjoy and educational tours in beautiful environments.

Of course, every mom appreciates things made personally for them by hand so why not surprise your mom with a handmade card, home-made meal or home baked goodies or delicious treats from local bakers, restaurants and confectioners.

Remember to show your love for our Mother Earth by buying products in biodegradable or at least recyclable materials and by disposing of packaging responsibly.
