OPINION: Will new wardens be effective crime fighters?

The community has lost faith in law enforcement in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

Will the appointment of the new recruits at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) Law Enforcement really be effective in combating crime?

When will they work shifts? Taxi drivers drive recklessly daily, and it seems they don’t respect law enforcement.

How did the taxi forum take charge of crime in the Port Shepstone CBD? Maybe they should have become permanent as they made a difference.

The community has lost faith in law enforcement in RNM. They target petty crime and don’t deal with serious problems that are affecting safety and tourism.

RESPONSE:
The newly recruited law enforcement wardens will be joining a team that has always been there; this is just reinforcement to ensure more visibility and effectiveness.

Our RNM Law Enforcement personnel continues to enforce the law, including traffic laws. Unfortunately, they cannot be everywhere at the same time, considering the large area.

The same goes for other law enforcement agencies; they cannot be everywhere at the same time, but surely, where they are present, they do enforce but also target hotspots where traffic laws are infringed.

Regarding the marshals at Port Shepstone CBD, the municipality appreciates the efforts initiated by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco).

To say the community has lost faith in RNM Law Enforcement and that they target petty crime while ignoring serious ones are subjective opinions which I wouldn’t like to comment on.

All I can say is that they (RNM Law Enforcement) continue working hard to ensure the safety of the Ray Nkonyeni community and those visiting the area. It is worth mentioning that the issue of crime is something that the State (including the municipality) cannot win working alone but with the involvement of the community at large.
