True Crime Junkies: Mystery of the Meadowbrook Doe

The construction crew was soon shocked when they found skeletal remains, clothing, and a ring underneath the steps of the swimming pool.

We all know the names Gert van Rooyen and Joey Haarhoff. We have all thought about what happened to the six girls that went missing between 1988 and 1990.

But this is not a story about the horrendous couple that killed themselves while being chased by the police in 1990; we all know that story.

This is a story about a girl who was murdered in Meadowbrook, Germiston. Episode 57 of True Crime South Africa tells the mystery of Meadowbrook Doe.

In 2012, a homeowner in Meadowbrook wanted his pool removed; the construction crew was soon shocked when they found skeletal remains, clothing, and a ring underneath the steps of the swimming pool.

The homeowner, disturbed by the discovery, hired a private investigator and forensic experts to assist the police investigation.

The police contacted the previous owner and discovered that the pool had been built in 1989.

Further investigations led them to a pool construction company.

Unfortunately, this company could not provide information as to who exactly worked on this specific swimming pool.

They did mention, however, that Gert van Rooyen was a subcontractor for them at the time, and it could have been him.

Shocking, I know.

These remains belonged to a young black female, and we know that Gert van Rooyen and Joey abducted white school girls, but do we know for a fact that Gert didn’t also like black girls?

We need to remember that this was still Apartheid, and missing young black females would certainly not have gained the same attention as white school girls.

There have also been reports that school uniforms found in the Van Rooyen household were from a predominantly black school.

Another fact is there were skeletal remains found in the property next to the van Rooyen’s home – guess where? Under the swimming pool.

A fascinating fact about this couple is that they both have children who also have a taste for wrongdoing.

Haarhoff’s son was found guilty on two charges of rape, and Van Rooyen’s son is on the run after a series of fraud crimes.

The identity of the young female found in Meadowbrook remains unknown. No one knows what happened to her, and we can only speculate that Van Rooyen might have been involved.

However, perhaps Occam’s razor principle applies in that the simplest explanation is usually the right one.
