OPINION: Car guards earn an honest wage

They are made up of workers who are merely trying to make ends meet.

A car guard is an informally employed person in charge of finding parking spots for cars and ensuring the safety of those cars until their owners return.

A car guard offers to guard vehicles in a public or private parking area for a donation. It enables an unemployed person to earn some income.

Car guards are made up of workers who are merely trying to make ends meet.

Though some individuals may not agree with what they do, these men and women are often there to support us.

Car guards must complete a security course required for registration with PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority), as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act was amended in 2015 to include car guarding under the sectoral determination of private security.

When my husband passed away in December 2023, it was a huge shock to my two sons and I.

With the money I received from the UIF Death Benefit, I enrolled my oldest son in Wolf Security’s Grade E-C security course, which he finished on May 31.

Nonto, the training officer, is excellent at her job and must be commended.

Well-dressed car guards earn an honest wage by guarding cars in parking areas, and 99% of them are not drug addicts who are trying to support their habits.

My son has been trying to find a permanent job here in Margate for many years and had to do casual jobs like roof waterproofing, cutting grass and handyman jobs like painting and fixing things.

He is not a ‘loafer’ as seen by so many of the ‘elite’ here in Margate, and neither is he on drugs.

He was offered a job as car guard at a business in Margate.

He was so happy as the tips he made put food on our table, and for once, he did not feel so useless.

Unfortunately, one of the owners did not like him from the beginning, and after a week working in the rain and cold, excuses were found to let him go.

First, this person told the other car guard he looks like a ‘druggie’.

Then, if he went inside to go to the restroom or asked for something, he was told he is ‘hanging around’ inside, and he was not allowed to do that. He apologised even though he knew he did nothing wrong.

I am sure when reading this article, this person will also find more reasons or excuses to justify their bad and inexcusable behaviour.

The same goes for those who spread false rumours about him that caused him to lose his job.

We tend to make snap judgments about others based on their looks, race, level of education, cars they drive, and social standing. There is an infinite list.

The fact that most individuals form opinions about others before speaking with them is just disgusting.

So, before you look down on a car guard, a security guard or anyone else again because you think you are so much better than them, rather be grateful for what you have as you have no idea what that person is going through in life. Be grateful that someone was willing to give you a chance in life.

I am very proud of my sons and grateful to have them in my life and to those people that helped us through this difficult stage in our lives.

It is people like you that instil hope and help keep us positive in this hard and unforgiving world where there are people who like to put others down and kick them while they are on the ground.
