OPINION: Praise for Port Shepstone hospital

"Medical staff members were outstanding on all aspects of nursing, including providing that extra little bit of TLC."

I am overwhelmed by the treatment I received in my little more than two-week stay in Ward A at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

The staff was most professional, from cleaners and porters to the nursing staff.

Medical staff members were outstanding on all aspects of nursing, including providing that extra little bit of TLC.

We read in the papers of the horrific situations in government hospitals.

I’ve been back in South Africa for 14 years after a long stay overseas. Since my return, I have been in several government hospitals, including the flagship in Tshwane, Steve Biko and three others in KZN.

The difference between Port Shepstone Regional Hospital and the others – I cannot describe in any other way than to say ‘wow’. What a pleasure it was.

Unfortunately, my operation was postponed due to the taxi strike on that day and some emergency cases that came in.

I was obviously disappointed, but the staff made sure that my morale remained high.

I’m a strong believer in God and have made peace that this happened for a reason.

I think it’s only fair that if bad stories could be splashed in the media, the good news must also be spread so people out there can have hope.

I wanted to go to audiology as I had a problem with my hearing aid. The sister said she would phone them and find out if I could come.
They offered to come and see me in the ward and did so. The friendly young woman came and took my hearing aid to see what was wrong.

She brought it back cleaned, with new batteries. All I could say again was ‘wow’.

According to my orthopaedic surgeon, they will operate on my other knee between six months to a year from now.

Have you ever heard of a patient looking forward to come to hospital? May I then be your first.

Thank you so much for all you have done. God bless you all.
