OPINION: All that glisters is not gold

"Here we shout to the world that South Africa is a world-class place to be with Johannesburg a world-class African city. Really?"

A applicable phrase to the hot air being expelled by our politicians at the moment would be, talk is cheap, but money buys the whisky – and I can put money down that they enjoy some of the blue label at their many conferences.

This recent SONA had a budget of R3m to cover the travel and the feeding and watering of the 3000 delegates expected to attend. That is obscene.

So much money spent on so few when there are families existing, not even living, just above the poverty threshold.

I believe in some parts of the Eastern Cape the rural residents catch and cook monkeys for supper.
I do notice how the delegates always appear well turned out, like models for a photo shoot, and well covered, showing that their lifestyles are definitely driven by fat salary cheques and living allowances.

Now that the election date has been announced it is hurry-scurry to appease the proletariat, as we need their votes because we have become happy fat cats and cannot face losing our places at the dinner trough. Hell no!
Promise them whatever they are awanting.

Tell them that attention to the problem will be boosted to government intervention level, then delay and delay, blaming this unfortunate development on the favourite and overworked challenges.

By the time votes are cast and counted, we are back in. Tee hee!
Shelve the project and blame the apartheid regime for whatever caused the catastrophic delay, although there have been 30 years to straighten the rails.

Goes back to the water crisis. Old infrastructure which now (and then) needed upgrading or replacing.
So, now I sit with the problem of no water supply, because the municipality did not do its planned maintenance.
But please do not blame yourselves for my water supply problem because the challenges you faced were so immense over the 30 years that you were not in the smallest degree, able to do the job you are paid to supposedly do!

All in all, a shameful state of affairs.
Here we shout to the world that South Africa is a world-class place to be with Johannesburg a world-class African city. Really?

When last did you view the City of Gold from street level – the city that established South Africa to the world as a powerhouse of financial opportunity with a dynamic future?

My fellow South Africans, see how easily the mighty fall when due diligence is not applied.
See how the grand old lady is showing her tattered petticoats to the world.
See how the rats from the sewers are chewing at her dainty shoes. See how quickly she loses her lustre.
See how all that glisters is not gold and this glistering has become the flavour of the future.
