OPINION: Municipal employees actions considered ‘dangerous’

"I paid my outstanding account within the stipulation period and find it unacceptable to have to pay a reconnection fee."

Upon returning home on Friday, January 19 this year, I found a notice, from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, stuck at my gate, reminding me that my electricity account is overdue.

I found that very decent of the municipality as my monthly recurring payments expired, which I didn’t notice.
I immediately made a payment to the full amount as mentioned on the reminder notice and sent a proof of payment, with the account number and the erf details to proofofpayments@rnm.gov.za.

When I got home on Wednesday, January 24, some three days into the next week, we had no power.
There was another RNM payment reminder stuck in the gate.

I found no breakers tripped inside the house and went to have a look to see if there wasn’t a breaker that tripped in the meter box in the street.

I found that two breakers were completely removed out of the box with the loose live wires dangling dangerously in it.
I find this whole incident very disturbing.

Not only does your accounts department seem to lack communication, creating unnecessary inconvenience and expense on both sides, but the ‘disconnection’ procedure is unacceptable.
These meter boxes are easily accessible and live wire hanging freely from it can have profoundly serious implications.

I paid my outstanding account within the stipulation period and find it unacceptable to have to pay a reconnection fee.
