BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning In – It’s time to clean up Scottburgh

Community news and events for mid-South Coast areas.

The Operation Beautification drive is on the second Saturday of December and members of Keep Scottburgh Beautiful advise that it’s time for a massive clean up.

They are calling on all residential and business areas to assist by taking ownership of verges and areas around properties, to clean up the space and make it beautiful on Saturday, December 9. All shops are asked to fix up their entrance areas. Businesses should do the same in front of their shops.

Complexes are urged to go beyond their gates and and tidy their surroundings. An appeal to residents who already have tidy areas to assist on the day in cleaning up around the wishing well, also the beach area and up the big hill from the bridge to the mall.

Conrad Kleynhans from PDM Construction will supply skips and place them in strategic places in and around town to dump black bags in. Helpers for the clean-up are advised to bring gloves and black bags, if possible. Rakes and spades are also a good idea.

Keep Scottburgh Beautiful will start by spraying the grass and weeds in the paving areas from the beach, along Marine Terrace, up to the corner of Shell Garage and past The Deck to Scott Street. We will then wait a week and clear up the dead grass and weeds. This will also be done on George Street to Blue Marlin Hotel.

This effort is to present a beautiful town for the Mardi Gras on December 17 and for visitors. If the community pulls together, we can get this done.

Pennington Conservancy is grateful as a few months ago, Jenny Howell (Cherry Lane resident) approached the conservancy regarding beautifying the area at the railway crossing. After discussion, her vision was realised. Jenny’s daughter Rayne did the landscaping plan and together they did the planting.

The plants were donated and Jenny and Dave Howell also sponsored the labour, compost and Sbu’s Garden Services. Rayne gave up her time to carefully place every plant. The Pennington Conservancy Green Team had also planned a clean up of the vegetation along the railway line and this made for the perfect combination! What a difference this has made to the entrance to Pennington Beach.
