Meanwhile, this is the week South Africans celebrate Nelson Mandela Day (July 18). The United Nations General Assembly declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day, in recognition of the contributions made by the former South African president to the culture of peace and freedom.
The theme for Mandela Day 2023 is ‘It’s In Your Hands’. The Nelson Mandela Foundation has also made a call to action for ‘Climate, Food & Solidarity’, highlighting these issues are some of the most urgent challenges facing people worldwide. What can you do for Mandela Day 2023? South Africans can take part in the day by planting trees and contributing to community and home-based food gardens. Nelson Mandela Day targets the planting of one million trees, 60 percent of which should be fruit trees.

In other news, a request has been received for items for Christmas shoeboxes which go to Alex Park, AMCUP, together with some pensioners and needy children. Contact Rix Windell on 072 1108988. Items required include toothpaste, toothbrushes, small hand cream, soap, facecloth, roll-on deodorant, small sweets, small biscuits, socks for men.

The same items are required for children if they are older than 10, together with a new item of clothing and something to use at school. Smaller children get a toy and a piece of clothing and something for school. Community members can put anything into the shoebox, for example, chips.
