BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning In – Locals compete in Dusi canoe marathon and a new fundraiser

Community news and events for Pennington and surrounding areas.

We are almost at the end of February, supposedly the hottest month in KZN. Coupled with Eskom loadshedding, it appears to be rather uncomfortable!

There was an unsettling incident in Pennington where a pitbull escaped her property and attacked a small dog which was being walked on a lead on the road. The injured dog is okay; the owner is completely traumatised. It was unnerving for all concerned.

Neil Lamble reported that he and his son, Trent, completed the Dusi Canoe Marathon in the most incredible conditions imaginable. The water was high on day one, huge on day two and massive on day three. It was a rollercoaster ride every inch of the way and with Trent’s excellent river skills, they managed to complete the course without even one swim – a most unusual occurrence for Neil! They even managed to finish in 126th position with an overall time of 10hr 15 mins – not bad for a 66-year-old with four weeks of training under the belt (the younger, fitter and more skilled partner did contribute to the performance as well).

It was also special that Neil’s wife (Trent’s mom) Di and son (brother) Clyde were there to second them the whole way and provide them with much needed sustenance at critical points along the route. Neil advises that it will almost certainly be his last Dusi and it was a truly wonderful way to finish off his involvement with an event that goes all the way back to 1986.

Eric and Gail Murray of Pennington has started a fund where people donate money and they buy tar to fix the road – specifically Coral and Ironwood Roads. They want to do Gumtree too if they receive tar. They would appreciate donations of tar bags which also help Nicholas Bheki (who helps tar) earn money. Anyone wishing to get involved can email Gail at Gail.j.murray@gmail.com
