OPINION: ‘We shouldn’t have to drive like a weaving boxer’

That shadow on the road could be a lurking pothole.

Allowing for a certain amount of paraphrase, ‘I can drive safely now, the potholes are gone’ – with apologies to Johnny Nash.

Dear fellow South Africans, fear not, because when there is something that should have been done, is found not to have been done – steps will be taken to establish a formal entity to do the job.

Naturally, this will be done with much blowing of trumpets and waving of flags – for we are jolly good fellows, and so say all of us.

Please note the wonder and disbelief that this pothole repair project being totally successful, as the quality of materials and substandard workmanship could stymie it.

A case in point is the stretch of road between Botha’s Pass and Vrede, which was resurfaced just over a year ago.

When you drive it now, you have to be a weaving expert, like a boxer, to miss the punches, which in this instance are potholes which can cause tyre blowouts.

So, motorists be safe and be aware. That shadow on the road could be a lurking pothole.
