OPINION: ‘New routes turn residential roads into Wild West’

It seems they are mostly avoiding Galway Street because of the speed humps.

DEAR Editor;

I live near the corner of Williamson Street, Scottburgh and the golf course which has now become the new main route through town, what is concerning me is the rapid deterioration of this already pothole-pitted road, and the incredibly high speeds that I’m witnessing.

On this street, a number of residents walk as families for exercise, take dogs for walks and school children walk to and from school.

Now, we have delivery trucks, taxis, vans, motorbikes and private vehicles tearing down the road, wildly swerving to avoid potholes, hooting at any opposing motorists swerving, racing to wherever they are going through a residential area with complete disregard for pedestrians or other drivers.

It has become like the Wild West out here!

It seems they are mostly avoiding Galway Street because of the speed humps.

Should some form of traffic control not be considered on Williamson Street? I’m sure the usual route won’t be repaired anytime soon and if you are one of the culprits disregarding this as a residential area, please could you just have a bit of consideration and slow down before someone gets hurt.
