OPINION: ‘Where must the people of Ugu find water?’

As the DA, we wish to thank the many businesses and ratepayers associations that have filled the gap.

DEAR Editor;

The Democratic Alliance has written to Kwa-Zulu Natal Premier, Sihle Zikalala, to directly intervene in the ongoing water crisis in the Ugu District Municipality.

Almost 150 000 residents of the South Coast have been without water for the past 16 days and counting.

Not only is this a brewing humanitarian crisis but Ugu is also violating Covid-19 regulations.

As the Covid-19 second wave approaches, hand-washing is a vital prevention measure.

Due to the lack of water provision, residents cannot comply with this vital measure.

There has also been no provision made by the municipality for alternative water provision, like tanks.

As the DA, we wish to thank the many businesses and ratepayers associations that have filled the gap.

The leadership of Ugu is placing the residents of the South Coast under increased risk of Covid-19.

Recently, the Premier and other MECs travelled around KwaZulu-Natal, ensuring the enforcement of Covid-19 regulations and issuing violation notices to errant businesses.

We call on Premier Zikalala to issue the leadership of Ugu with a Covid-19 violation notice and hold them accountable.

In the letter to the Premier, we have also called for his direct intervention in the district.

We call on him to push the MEC of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sipho Hlomuka, to place the district under section 139 administration and the appointment of a competent administrator.

The problems are both service delivery and political.

The DA will continue to fight until all there is a permanent solution found for the Ugu water crisis.
