PMB thunee masters are champs

The thunee competition was well supported by locals and visitors.

Thunee gurus from around the country played in the second competition of the year at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort last Saturday.

About 70 teams took part; the previous tournament in June saw about 120 teams.

It was an excellent tournament in the hotly contested card game, with the visitors not only claiming the top prize but also second and third prizes. Sam Naidoo and Buck Naidoo from Pietermaritzburg won the competition and walked away with the R20 000 first prize.

The June winners, Asogan Gounden and Mohamed Swaleh Khan from Phoenix claimed second place and winnings of R7 000, while Steven Naidoo and Bob Gungiah from Durban claimed third place and R3 000 in cash.

A large contingent of local players were knocked out early, proving that the Durban and Pietermaritzburg teams have special skills and talent.

Congratulating third place winners (middle) Steven Naidoo and Bob Gungiah are Ntokozo Mothapo and event organiser Anandh Perumal.

The event organiser at the resort, Anandh Perumal, thanked the players and sponsors for making it a success. “We are grateful to the players who supported this much-loved competition, which started some 10 years ago at the resort. The tournament attracts many to the resort, but more importantly, brings thunee players together, which keeps the competition alive. A number of women are also taking part, which shows that the sport is growing.”

Thunee is a popular trick-taking card game of the jack–nine family that originated in Durban. It is believed that the game was developed by indentured Indian labourers, which has stood the test of time.
