Former teacher pens book of poems

One of the poems came in the top three at a poetry competition at Lotus FM.

On taking a mammoth decision to resign from teaching after 15 years, Indira Ramadeen of Port Shepstone now looks forward to a greater future.

Fate has knocked on her door to take on a path she previously enjoyed, which included art, writing songs and poetry, drama, singing, playing musical instruments, programme directing, fashion design and all things creative.

Winning a song-writing competition at Radio Lotus FM many years ago paved the way for Indira to write other songs that have featured on two CD collections. She also produced one of the songs herself.

Indira also appeared in two music videos by overseas artists. She studied Sanskrit, Hindi and English simultaneously since she was six years old. She has also been writing poetry and short stories since a teenager.

A collection of 25 poems has been published in a book titled ‘Waltz’, which was launched at the Andhra Sabha Hall on Saturday. It will also be available on Amazon.

Indira’s first book, Waltz, is a collection of poems she has written.

One of the poems came in the top three at a poetry competition at Lotus FM. She has turned that poem into a play, which will be showcased at the book launch.

“My writing has also taken a new form. I have written, directed and produced a comedic play filled with mystery that is based on one of my poems, which appears in my book. I embrace being a teacher, it being a noble profession and one of my callings, but I must heed my other callings. I would not have left if I didn’t have a constant feeling that my dreams were beckoning to me, those dreams and goals that I left behind years ago.”

Indira contemplated her move for two years.

“I guess it is time to strut towards my new journey. I am currently studying further, and I am working on my second book. My poems have been developed into videos, and my brand name is Diya. I am humbled and so grateful for this moment for ‘the road not taken’ that I have returned to take,” said Indira.
