Sheppie Rotary empowers future leaders

The leadership course included workshops on public speaking, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.

Sixty-nine Grade 11 learners from various schools in KZN (Rotary District 9370) and eight mentors attended an inspiring, meaningful and educational week-long leadership course to promote learning, understanding and awareness of various topics recently.

The innovative programme is hosted annually by the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone, and this year marked the 59th year that the course has been running.

Learners attended the programme during the school holidays from September 22 to 28.

Rotary’s youth director, Sharmin Maharaj said the aim of the programme is to encourage and help future leaders to become more confident and proactive.

“Rotary clubs identify and sponsor learners from various schools in their area. We are grateful to all clubs, our local community and businesses who support this programme. It’s always encouraging to see the group arrive uncertain and scared but leave here armed with knowledge and ready to face the world.”

The course includes workshops on public speaking, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Participants also engage in real-world community projects, allowing them to apply their skills in practical scenarios. Each session is led by experienced mentors and skilled presenters who guide students through interactive activities, group discussions, and personal leadership challenges.

A significant component of the course is its focus on community engagement. This ranges from environmental initiatives to organising community support to business skills.

“We want young people to see that leadership is not just about titles; it’s about making a difference where you are,” said Maharaj.

Learners expressed their excitement about the life-changing experience this course had to help them find their voice and learn how to lead with confidence. The course is designed to foster long-term leadership skills that learners can carry with them into adulthood.

Organisers hope that many of the learners will continue to serve in leadership roles, both at school, in their communities and beyond. With its focus on personal development, practical experience, and community engagement, the youth leadership course is making a significant impact.

“Not only are the participants growing in confidence, but they are also learning how to use their leadership skills to positively influence their communities. As more young people step into leadership roles, the future looks bright for our next generation of changemakers,” concluded Maharaj.

The club thanks businesses, sponsors, mentors and club members for making the course a success.
