Some 1200 cupcakes were sold at this year’s National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer event held at Shelly Centre last Saturday.
Ranjinee Ramdeen, Cupcakes of Hope South Coast co-ordinator for Shelly Centre, said it was a huge success with more funds raised than last year.
Traditionally, September 28 is National Cupcake Day, and Ramdeen said 75 shopping outlets around the country supported the cause this year.
For Ramdeen, this was her 10th year as a cupcake angel.
“Raising funds for children with cancer is close to my heart as I lost my 16-year-old daughter to cancer,” she said.
This particular event has taken place since 2012 to raise funds for Cupcakes of Hope, a non-profit company which supports families and children who are diagnosed with cancer.
Ramdeen said it was fantastic to have two youngsters, Elliana Zoe Mohan (8) and Aadil Maharaj (9) bake cupcakes.
“I bake for National Cupcake Day because it brings hope and makes a huge difference in the lives of children battling with cancer. I love helping everyone where I can,” said Mohan.
Maharaj said this was his second time baking cupcakes of hope. “I enjoy baking and helping sell these cupcakes. I want to encourage all young people to bake as well.”
“If young children can get involved and support this worthy cause, then we all can make a difference,” said Ramdeen.
She thanked her fantastic team of volunteers for making the event such a success.
