A concerned local (who wishes to go by Mrs Hack) was horrified to see the condition of the entrance to Mzimayi Beach, off the R102 close to Rocky Bay, on the way to Pennington.

The Herald visited the site with Hack last Saturday and found a lot of rubbish lying around, which included alcohol bottles, clothing items and litter. The section of bush in which the pathway was made was also recently burnt.

“It is disgusting and looks like a dump with rubbish strewn all over. I am not sure who is in charge of cleaning the pathway and the beach, but they are certainly not being responsible,” she said.

After walking through the pathway in the bush, one would have to cross the railway line before walking onto the beach.

There was also a lot of rubbish close to the railway line and on the grass patches before the beach. Damaged cables were left lying on the ground as well.

“This is such a beautiful beach, and the beach itself is always clean. It’s just disappointing that we have to go through a disgusting path to get here,” added Hack.

Rubbish piling up just before the beach.

Hack mentioned that there is wildlife in this area, including birds, and she has even spotted a duiker near the pathway.

“I don’t know if people are just dumping or if vagrants are responsible. Either way, whoever is responsible should be ashamed and organise a clean-up.”
