Umdoni maidens take part in Reed Dance

Umdoni held a prayer meeting in Umzinto last Friday.

About 340 maidens from the Umdoni Municipality jurisdiction headed to the Annual Reed Dance, also known as uMkhosi woMhlanga, at Enyokeni Royal Palace, KwaNongoma.

These maidens were among thousands who participated in this event, which took place last Saturday, where they presented the reed to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

As a norm, Umdoni held a prayer meeting in Umzinto last Friday to ask the Almighty to guide and protect the maidens.

Umdoni mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli told the maidens to behave, offered advice and revealed the importance of the traditional testing of girls.

Umdoni’s mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli wished the young girls well before they headed off to Enyokeni Royal Palace.

“This is a culture which educates us about how you should behave, the importance of being a maiden, and to prevent teenage pregnancies,” said Cele-Luthuli.

She concluded by saying that Umdoni Municipality is excited to have these maidens who take good care of themselves, follow their culture and maintain their maidenship.
