Hindus observe month-long fast

During this period, observers abstain from non-vegetarian meals.

Many Hindus have started a month-long fast for Purtassi from September 17 until October 17, Pitra Paksh from September 17 to October 2 and Navaratri from October 3 to October 12.

* The Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Temple will observe the following prayers: Purtassi prayer this Saturday (21st) from 15:00; Jhunda prayer on Sunday, October 6, from 10:00 and Muruga Shasti on Tuesday, October 8, from 18:30.

Navaratri will start from Thursday, October 3, until Friday, October 11. Daily prayers will commence at 18:00. Maha Saraswathi prayer will be on Friday, October 11, with hawan at 18:00.

The last Purtassi prayer will be on Saturday, October 12, at 15:00, which will be followed by a Raam Bhajan prayer at 19:00.

* The Port Shepstone Hindu Temple Shiva Alayam invites all to the annual Purtassi prayer this Saturday, September 21, at 15:00.

* The Shree Hanuman Sanathan Dharma Sabha Mandir invites all to the Navaratri prayer from October 3 to 12. Weekday prayers start at 18:00 and at 15:00 on weekends.

Maha Saraswati Puja will be observed on October 10, and Khanya Puja on October 11. Join the members of the Mandir for a week of daily prayers, recitals, hawans and bhajans.

* The Shree Raam Narayan Temple Society in Marburg will observe Pitra Paksh from September 17 to October 2. Navaratri will be observed from October 3 to October 12, with Sri Durga Naumi celebrated on October 11.

* Diwali or Deepavali will be celebrated on October 31.
