The Umbango Siva Soobramoniar Alayam was established in the early 1930s by the late Soobramoniar Moodley’s mother, Chinnama Moodley, known as ‘Mbango Party’. The temple was then a small wood and iron building where the Soobramoniar family prayed and worshipped the deities.

According to a senior devotee at the temple, Vasi Moodley: “The present Maha Mariamman Temple was then ‘Aunty Chinnama’s’ house where she lived with her family. When she died in 1968, her family continued the family traditions. Umbango Temple is dearly loved by many devotees who continue with Hindu tradition.”
