Margate sewer pipeline repaired, says Ugu

Some residents also held a meeting to discuss the issue of sewage backflowing into their drains.

Ugu District Municipality’s spokesperson, France Zama, has said that the Margate sewer pipeline has been repaired.

“We are currently jetting the pipeline, meaning that we are cleaning and clearing any blockages.”

The sewage situation in Margate seemed to have worsened on Monday morning last week while residents waited for Ugu to sort it out.

On the same morning, sewage was flowing into the Nkongweni River to the ocean.

Some residents also held a meeting to discuss the issue of sewage backflowing into their drains.

A community member, Geraldine Moatshe, said they have been trying to have a meeting with the Ugu mayor, Skhumbuzo Mqadi, to address the issue and get an exact timeline as to when it will be sorted out.

According to Zama, the reason for the backflow was because of blockages caused by sand and some particles in the pipelines.

He said by this week, the lines should be functioning as normal.

Also, at the meeting, Moatse said they were looking for help from the private sector and retired specialists.

Moatshe said the situation is now a disaster, and the little rain experienced last weekend has not helped.

“We cannot even promote tourism because of the situation; we cannot ask people to come to Margate when it’s smelling so bad with sewage flowing into the sea.”
