Maidens urged to stay pure

The mini reed dance was final preparation before the main event to be held at Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma on September 24.

The Zulu Royal Household’s Princess Lindiwe Zulu has told maidens who are preparing to attend the Annual Reed Dance, better known as uMkhosi woMhlanga, to remain pure and be proud of who they are.

She also told maidens to stay away from bad influences such as alcohol and to focus on developing themselves and furthering their education in order to reach their destiny.

Princess Zulu was speaking during a mini reed dance which was held at Vusushaba Sportsfield, Oshabeni location near Port Shepstone last Saturday.

This event, at a district level, is regarded as the final preparation before the main event to be held at Enyokeni  Royal Palace in Nongoma on September 24.

Speaking directly to the maidens or amatshitshi, Princess Zulu said: “Alcohol and the maidens are two different things which do not go along. Maidens, wearing tights at eNkonyeni (Royal Palace) must stop.”

Happy to attend the maidens’ event are (back, from left) Akhona Gcaba, Londiwe Nzama, Sibongakonke Mayela and Andiswa Bhengu; (middle) Thandolwethu Cele and Cebolenkosi Cele, with Siyamthanda Shezi in front.

She also said at eNkonyeni, the maidens should not worry about who says what about their bodies, and that should not concern them. “As maidens, you do not cover your breasts. Also, when we perform the Zulu dance, we use hands to cover ‘private’ parts,” she said.

Inkosi Sthembiso KaZwengu Lushaba also urged maidens not to embarrass themselves by getting involved in unacceptable things. “When you leave for eNyokeni, please take care of yourselves and respect oNomehlo (virginity inspectors).”

Attending the mini reed dance are Zekhethelo Lushaba (left) and Aneziwe Cele.
