Cable theft leaves residents powerless

There has been several cases of cable theft in the mid-South Coast lately.

There has been yet another case of cable theft in the mid-South Coast area, which left several homeowners in Alkins Drive, Park Rynie, without electricity since about 02:00 on Monday this week.

Residents discovered that cables were stolen near a stream in the area, resulting in the power outage.

The matter was reported to Eskom and the police.

Around 21:00 on Wednesday, power was finally restored.

Also, on August 8, there was a major case of cable theft in Scottburgh, which affected the entire area’s supply. This was restored in under 48 hours.

In another incident on June 20, about 600m of MV cable had been stolen, and the Ring Main Unit (RMU) had also been damaged in Scottburgh.

Eskom’s media desk was made aware of all these incidents. And, when the last cable theft incident occurred in August, they were asked if they would be able to put forward any measures to prevent this from recurring in these areas month after month.

No comments were received.

Residents are reminded to report all electricity-related criminal activities such as illegal connections, theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure to the Eskom crime line number: 0800 112 722.
