Uniting to help people in need

A six-year-old girl desperately needed a wheelchair.

Local NGO representatives meet once a month in Amanzimtoti, where they share resources and information about how they can help each other and the community through Better Together meetings.

Through this united front, NGOs and concerned individuals were able to provide a six-year-old girl with a wheelchair to finally be mobile.

Khanya Hospice’s Neil McDonald explained that social worker Nokukhanya Mkhize informed him about the little girl who has been disabled since birth.

“The child’s grandmother has to carry her every day – about one kilometre to the taxi rank and back. The terrain is difficult to traverse in this rural area,” explained McDonald.

He added that although hospice is known for assisting its patients, it also strives to help local communities at large.

“We always help where and when we can if we have the resources.”

After placing articles in local newspapers, people came forward offering to repair old wheelchairs and also donated unused ones.

Mohammed Shaik is one of the individuals who responded to the call and kindly donated a wheelchair for the child.

It was handed over to her recently, together with local organisation representatives who were instrumental in making this donation possible.
