Sun, sand and rock climbing at Shoreline Challenge

Join the next challenge from Port Edward Beach to Mtamvuna River on Sunday, August 18.

It’s been a rocky adventure for many walkers taking part in leg six and seven of the WIN Walking In Nature Shoreline Challenge.

The gorgeous weather has set a pleasant tone for the Sunday adventures, with plenty of seashells and stones to collect and seabirds to watch.

Mzimkhulu Honorary Officer Maxine Willemse said the last two walks have been successful, with a great turnout.

The stretch, from Mpenjati to Munster on Sunday, July 21, included walking effortlessly across flat stretches of beach to a more challenging scramble over large sections of rocks.

A nice surprise was seeing the Nightingale shipwreck at Glenmore Beach. This shipwreck has been there since 1933, and beachgoers can see the ship’s boiler and cylinder at low tide.

Then, the 5.4km walk from Munster to Port Edward last Sunday was a superb one, with rocky sections here and there.

Most excitingly, geologist Paddy Norman found pieces of blue and white porcelain from the Portuguese shipwreck, São João (1552), which was carrying a cargo of pepper, Ming dynasty china, Indian carnelian beads, and ‘money cowrie’ shells.

The final and eighth leg is a 7km walk from Port Edward Beach to Mtamvuna River on Sunday, August 18.
