Join David Marks to celebrate Woodstock this Sunday

Marks attended the famous rock music festival held on a farm in Bethal, New York in August 1969.

It was three days of peace, love and music.

You guessed it… Woodstock, August, 1969!

This Sunday (August 18) will be a walk down memory lane for all who loved the ‘Woodstock era’, as legendary musician David Marks will lead an afternoon of music at Die Local/Down the Rabbit Hole (the old Castaways), 10 Ocean Drive North, Southport from 14:00 to 17:00. Lunch is from midday.

Marks is something of a South African music celebrity and one who attended Woodstock. There will be a photo exhibit on display and tall tales from Woodstock shared, plus prizes for the best-dressed local hippie on the day.

He will be joined by local musicians Tyran Roy, Kellen Crystin, Zac Graham, Kaine-Storm Bailey and other guest musicians.

Marks is a South African-born songwriter, singer, producer, music archivist and publisher who has been a member of the South African music industry since the 1970s.

He spent much of his early career mixing, recording, releasing and archiving a broad cross-spectrum of South African music.

Marks achieved success with his songwriting, penning some international hits, most notably Master Jack, Mr. Nico, and Hey Mister.

And some 55 years ago, he attended the famous music festival, remembered simply as Woodstock in New York.

Musicians Tyran Roy and Kellen Crystin.

He is also known for his work as a sound engineer and director of the 3rd Ear Music Company.

Some will also remember the documentary called The Night Train by film director Kevin Harris, which is set in the 1900s and 1970s when some five million Mozambican migrant workers rode the ‘night train’ to come and work for the coal and gold mines of the Witwatersrand that built the booming industrial economy of South Africa. The music for this film was done by Marks and Hugh Masekela.
