‘Bake’ a difference in lives of cancer warriors

This fundraiser will help the KZN community celebrate National Cupcake Day with Cupcakes of Hope on September 28.

Preparations have begun for this year’s Cupcakes 4 Kids With Cancer drive at Galleria Mall in Amanzimtoti.

This fundraiser will help the KZN community celebrate National Cupcake Day with Cupcakes of Hope on September 28.

Cupcakes of Hope is a non-profit company and public benefit organisation with a mission to raise awareness of childhood cancer and to raise funds for children with cancer who are in need of medical and financial assistance.

Prior to the event, pre-sales are usually done, and areas such as Scottburgh and Umkomaas were included in previous years.

For this popular cupcake drive, volunteers (also known as Cupcake Angels) are requested to ‘bake’ a difference in the lives of cancer warriors.

“The only requirement to be a Cupcake Angel is that your cupcakes must be made with love. We can make a difference in this world; all we need is a bit of time and lots of love,” said Shyanne Kanayee, co-ordinator of the drive at Galleria Mall since 2018.

Kanayee is passionate about the work done by this organisation and its volunteers, and she has also been involved in a lot of the fundraising on the mid-South Coast.

The organisation, on average, assists 200 cancer warriors each month by paying for some of their medical treatments and day-to-day expenses such as food, clothing and transport for hospital visits.

All of the warriors go through a registration process, which includes the submission of doctors’ letters specifying their cancer diagnosis.

As an ever-increasing number of new patients register each month, they are looking for new ways to raise funds.

The team raises money by approaching companies and sponsors with requests to donate money, and they hold several awareness and fundraising campaigns throughout the year.

If you would like to volunteer at Galleria Mall for the upcoming cupcake drive or potentially become a sponsor, contact co-ordinators Shyanne Kanayee on 079 3437291 or Emmie Barnard on 082 7707998.
