Road horror: 6 dead in weekend accidents

Sympathies have been extended to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

Six people lost their lives in three separate motor vehicle accidents on South Coast roads last weekend.

Four died and three were injured in an accident on the N2 last Saturday afternoon. This happened on the stretch of highway between the Umtentweni tollgate and Umzumbe.

Later that evening paramedics from Med-Evac attended to collision involving two vehicles on the R61 near San Lameer.

“Both drivers were entrapped and one was declared dead on the scene. The jaws of life were used to free the other driver, who was subsequently taken to hospital,” said Glen Preston of Med-Evac.

Preston said paramedics then attended to a hit-and-run at an intersection in Port Edward. The pedestrian was declared dead on the scene.

An hour later, Med-Evac responded to a truck (transporting beer) which had rolled and caught alight.

“The accident left two people with moderate injuries,” Preston said.

In a separate incident, also on Saturday, there was a near-drowning incident involving two bathers at Margate beach.

A tragedy was adverted thanks to swift action by lifeguards.

Craig Lambinon of National Sea Rescue Institute, confirmed that when NSRI arrived on the scene, the two people were out of the water and in the hands of emergency services.
