TAXI STRIKE LATEST: Good news, it’s back to normal tomorrow (31st)

A positive outcome is hoped for.

The Herald has received reports that after the meeting today between Siboniso Duma, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, taxi operators, and other departments, that the taxis (and other public transport) will operate as normal from tomorrow.
Attendees, including Saps and law enforcement, are leaving or have left the meeting, which, by some accounts, went well.
The Herald will continue to update where and when necessary.

In an update on the taxi strike on the South Coast, this has come in from the desk of the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma.
Following a meeting with the leadership of the South African National Taxi Council and Ugu Taxi Association, Duma took a decision to travel to Port Shepstone to meet with taxi operators at Marburg Sports Ground this afternoon.
As stated this morning, the focus is on working collectively to ensure an efficient and functioning transport sector that moves people and goods safely, speedily and affordably.
Duma said he has have received a detailed report from the Mayor of Ugu District Municipality Cllr Sikhumbuzo Isaac Mqadi and Mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality Clle Zodwa Mzindle.
“We are fully aware that many people were affected by the protests and unavailability of public transport yesterday and this morning.”
Based on the Mayors and SANTACO’s reports, their immediate task is to ensure that:-
● Nurses, doctors and all health workers are in hospitals and clinics to provide quality care to patients;
● Teachers are in school and teaching;
● Learners are in school and learning;
● Government and municipal workers are at work and accelerating service delivery;
● Workers are at work – working to grow the economy.
