UK quilter passes on expertise

John Cole-Morgan says the biggest misconception is that quilting is for old ladies, however, for him it is a creation of something special.

On a recent visit, John Cole-Morgan of Quilters Legacy Foundation from London, UK, met with Hibiscus quilters at Margate Retirement Village.

He also showed them some of the quilts made around the world and that the local quilters had made almost 300 miniature quilts.

“We are hoping to display these all around the world to promote South African quilting.”

Cole-Morgan said the biggest misconception is that quilting is for old ladies. However, for him, it is the creation of something special.

He said so much love and time is spent on each quilt made.

In South Africa, quilts are used as bedding, blankets and more.

He said the process of making a quilt is like art because you create pieces and then put them together using your hands.

Cole-Morgan said quilts last very long, one being 400 years old.
