Hundreds of households await electrification

The project is budgeted at R11-m.

The long-awaited electrification project for Kiss Kiss and Mbetheni areas under Ward 11 in Umdoni has begun.

A sod-turning ceremony was held recently to mark the commencement of the project, which elated many residents who cannot wait to have electricity connected to their homes.

The project is budgeted at R11-m.

Umdoni Mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli explained that the project will connect 269 houses in the current financial year and 154 houses in the next.

“The municipality submitted a request for financial support to the Ministry of Mining and Energy and was approved for a budget of just over R11-m, which will only be able to connect 269 households,” said Cele-Luthuli.

Another request has been submitted to the department that the remaining 154 households be connected in the 2025/26 financial year.

“We are asking the remaining families not to be discouraged but to remain hopeful. We are committed to ensuring that everyone is part of development as written in the Freedom Charter.”

Cele-Luthuli also reminded these communities that once they are connected to electricity, they should make sure that they pay for it. She pointed out that underprivileged families should contact their relevant ward councillors to register for the Indigent Support programme.

“We urge the public to cooperate with the contractor and the councillor at all times so that this project can go according to plan and be completed within the appointed time of six months,” she added.
