Poem for Madiba

A poem by Port Shepstone's Siane Moodley (16) for Mandela Day.

A man with a soul as pure as water

who risked his life in Freedoms Charter.

Nelson Mandela, a name we respect,

a legacy that we will proudly project.

In the austere, oppressive bounds of a cell,

he suffered a living hell.

Envisaged freedom beneath the stars

during the twenty-seven years he spent behind bars.

Amidst the darkness and shadows, his light glistened bright.

Steering a nation through its nefarious night.

Through challenges and turmoil, his heart stayed true.

With fortitude and valour that only a few knew.

Around the world, his name we chant

an emblem of aspiration in every heart.

Inspired by his example, we continue to strive

Reminiscing about Mandela with gratitude and pride

Nelson Mandela, a name we respect,

a legacy that we will proudly project.
