Coastal walk a marvelous meander

The next walk is from Mpenjati to Munster on July 21.

Ninety-six walkers braved the chilly start of the fifth leg of the Shoreline Challenge, which took place from Southbroom to Mpenjati last Sunday.

Mzimkhulu Honorary Officer (HO) Maxine Willemse said the walk along the beach was especially beautiful.

At the halfway mark, walkers were met by Teuns Willemse, the HO chairman, who was handing out sweets.

The sugar boost was much-needed, it seemed. The breakfast rolls at the end were also well received.

Maxine said the Oasis Water photographic competition was in full swing.

Braving the cold are (from left) Joanie Strachan, Dubretha Oosthuizen and Sheryl Perold.

“The beach cleanup continues, and we love seeing the Boogie Babes in their bright pink shirts. It is very exciting to see how many participants have completed all the legs so far and will be eligible for the award of the t-shirt at the end,” she said.

On an unfortunate note, walkers found many nurdles, pieces of polystyrene and a handful of what seemed to be plastic sucker sticks.

Nurdles and pieces of plastic found in a rocky bay in Southbroom.

Nurdles are tiny plastic pellets and cause devastating damage to the environment and marine life.

The next walk, leg six, is 5.4km from Mpenjati to Munster on Sunday, July 21.

Ready to walk are (from left) Kerri Lee Clarke, Ruth Clarke, Dave Lucey, Robbie Clarke and Matthew Clarke.
