JUST IN: Emergency services kept busy as fires break out in Margate and Uvongo [WATCH]

A home in Uvongo has been engulfed in flames.

Fires in Margate and Uvongo have kept the municipal fire, disaster and rescue team busy today.

And fighting them has been made especially challenging considering what one resident described as a ‘ghastly’ south-westerly wind, one which has blown in with a vengeance.

A house with a thatch roof caught alight in Knox-Gore Road in Uvongo (on the border with St Mike’s) and has suffered extensive damage.

Further south, residents of Tedder Avenue in Margate have been faced with what could be described as a veld fire at the old off-road motorcycle track.

The strong wind has not helped the stressful situation and the fire has spread across the field to within close proximity of residential homes.

At the time of writing, the Herald had been notified that the fire and rescue department had the fires under control.

France Zama of Ugu District Municipality confirmed that a number of fires had occurred.

“Our fire engine truck was sent to Uvongo to deal with a fire at a household with thatch roof, which is burning down (or has burnt down). Once they have managed the situation, they will be dispatched to Tedder Avenue in Margate,” he said.

This is an evolving story and will be updated as soon as more information comes to light.
