Floral art club celebrates 45 years

Celebrations were very well attended and included three South African Flower Union judges who judged 14 designs on the day.

There was much joy at the 45th anniversary celebration of the South Coast Floral Art Club last week Tuesday.

The event was held at the Margate Methodist Church and attended by floral artists and friends from near and far.

Phyllida Cockell, who lived in Ramsgate at the time, founded the club at the same venue on June 19, 1979.

Enjoying the celebrations are (back, from left) Gaythree Ramlall, Janakie Depalal and Nadira Kanhai with Bimla and Mary Bissram in front.

In the two years prior to that, she had learnt the craft and then taught it to those interested at the Village of Happiness in Margate.

Before long, the hall there became too small, and so the club was officially started, with the venue being the church.

It has been going strong since, with monthly meetings taking place at the church on the second Tuesday morning of every month.

Phyllida is now 94 years old and currently living in the UK.

She sent a message to the club, wishing them well, and delighted to know that what was started so many years ago has blossomed.

Celebrations were very well attended and included three South African Flower Union judges who judged 14 designs on the day.

The club was awarded three gold ribbons and several silver ribbons.

In the advanced section, old went to Heila Groenewald, Sanitha Stephen and Hanna Kock, with silver to Deborah Govender, Dolly Naicker and Vernon Gengan.

Two international judges then honoured those present with an interesting flower demonstration.
Chairperson Hanna Kock thanked everyone who attended, and especially those who had travelled from St Lucia, Ballito, Hillcrest and Durban.

She also paid tribute to past members, including the late Ann Brand, who died last year, and others who had played such a big role in keeping the club going and maintaining its success.
