‘Heavy weights’ abound at strength contest

Organisers plan on making the contest an annual event.

Strongmen and strongwomen refer to strength athletics composed of a variety of events in which competitors have to move the heaviest weights possible.

Strongmen and strongwomen who took part in the competition last Saturday.

One Up Fitness Gym presented a well-supported South Coast strongmen and women contest at Umtentweni Ambleside recently.

Contestants included learners and veterans from Durban, Kokstad and locals who came out to show their strength and compete in events such as deadlift, farmer’s walk, log press, tyre flips and bakkie pulling.

Besides competing in the event, locals enjoyed browsing the variety of stalls at the flea market.

The overall winners are as follows:

Women’s U75kg – Nomusa Zulu (1st), Amelia Krishna (2nd) and Tyla Frank (3rd).

Women’s 75kg open – Helen Stubbs (1st), Bulelwa (surname not provided – 2nd) and Stha Nyawose (3rd).

Learners’ division – Jean du Plessis (1st), Francois van Noordwyk (2nd) and Jakkie Leus (3rd).

Men’s U95kg – Terrance Viviers (1st), Thuthukani Mhlongo (2nd) and Siphiwe Mlambo (3rd).

Men’s 95kg open – Zola Nondabula (1st), Arne van Niekerk (2nd) and House Nyawose (3rd).

Fitness division – It was a tie with Tehl-Cadi Da-Garden, Nellie Davies and Celeste Koekemoer sharing first place.

The organiser of the event, Selvan Naidoo, thanked all who made the event a huge success. “We plan to make it an annual one as it brought the community together. The contest also created a healthy, keep fit, strong community and was well-supported by the youngsters,” said Selvan.
