No financial help yet for Margate disaster

The municipal spokesperson, Simon April, briefed the media on Tuesday last week and said with this application, the municipality requested funding of about R400m to enable it to attend to the damage to infrastructure.

No financial aid has been secured by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) from the National Department of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (Cogta) or the National Disaster Management Centre for the mitigation of the April 14-15 disaster caused by the heavy rainfall in Margate.

The flash flood which followed hit Margate and surrounds and left a trail of infrastructure destruction.

RNM submitted an application to the Provincial Disaster Management Centre for Margate to be declared a disaster area.

The municipal spokesperson, Simon April, briefed the media on Tuesday last week and said with this application, the municipality requested funding of about R400m to enable it to attend to the damage to infrastructure.

“The municipality is still waiting for a written response from Cogta in this regard. However, the municipality is still using its limited internal resources to mitigate effects of the disaster,” said April.
